A Brief Introduction to the College
With a long history of 72 years, Guangdong Light Industry Technical
College was established in 1933 as the First Polytechnic School of Guangdong
Province. Subsequently, it has experienced several changes of name and
modifications to its schooling system. Four-year programs were offered
from the late 1950s into the early 1960s and again from 1978 through 1983.
The school has been an important national base for vocational education
since 1990, with three-year vocational programs being offered from 1999.
It is sponsored by the Guangdong Provincial government and is directly
affiliated with the Guangdong Provincial Education Department.
The college has two campuses covering a total area of 1.17million square
meters, of which Guangzhou campus represents 13,000 square meters and
Nanhai campus being 1 million square meters. The overall construction
area is 43,000 square kilometers. The teaching apparatus and equipment
are valued at RMB 85,836,000 and the library consists of 103,000 volumes.
The stadium covers an area of 112,000 square meters. The school currently
has a full-time enrolment of 14,130.
The college has thirteen schools / departments. These departments are:
Arts School, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Food and Bio-Engineering,
Chemical Engineering, Management Sciences, Computer Engineering, Applied
Foreign Languages, Electronic Communication Engineering, Economics, Tourism
Media and Communication, Automotive and the Further Education School.
There are 13 disciplines with 54 majors, among which Electrochemical Integration
has been introduced on an experimental basis, in line with the policies
of the National Ministry of Education. Advertising Design is a provincial
trial major. The college is also the training base for digital controls
and for computer sciences and software technology.
There are 836 faculty members working on campuses, of which 662 are full-time
and 174 are part-time teachers. 214 faculty members are associate professors
and 202 hold a Master's degree.
The college has received students from 13 provinces, with an average annual
enrolment of over 5,000 students. First-choice enrolment in 2005 was double
the expected figure. The actual admission score level was 30 points higher
than other vocational colleges.
The college has had 7,889 graduates since 1999. The overall employment
rates for the past three years have been 97.92%, 98.75% and 99.35% respectively.
According to feedback from the employers, 90% of graduates, for these
periods, are well qualified,.
The development and achievements of the college have been highly praised
by the authorities. The college was awarded the prestigious titles of
"National Advanced Institution of Vocational Education", "National
Advanced Institution of Light Industry", amongst others. In 2005
the principal of the college was awarded the honor of "Outstanding
Person in National Vocational Education" by the Ministry of Education
and Ministry of Personnel.
